Bone Augmentation Fitzroy
What Is Bone Augmentation and When Is It Necessary?
Dental implants need sufficient bone to support them in order to be successful. Jawbone can be reabsorbed after tooth loss or it can be destroyed due to periodontal disease or another dental infection, or as a result of trauma or injury. Sometimes bone may have been missing since birth. During your initial consultation for dental implants, we will carefully assess your jawbone through taking dental x-rays and a cone beam CT scan. These diagnostic images will show us a clear picture of your jawbone and if there is insufficient height or width to support a dental implant then we will suggest bone augmentation prior to implant surgery.
The term bone augmentation is quite broad and can be used to describe a number of different procedures to build up bone. These procedures typically involve using various types of bone grafting material to help build up bone in areas where it is deficient.
Where Will the Bone Come from?
We prefer to use the very highest quality synthetic bone grafting material, eliminating the need to take bone from another area in your body or the need to use donor bone. These synthetic materials can contain special proteins that help stimulate your body to produce its own bone cells and are highly advanced and are we feel the very best choice for our clients. We will discuss all the most suitable options with you in far greater detail prior to your implant surgery so you have all the knowledge required to make an informed choice.
How Long Will It Take to Heal?
After a bone augmentation we will provide antibiotics and an antibacterial mouthwash to help keep the surgery site clean. We will also give you lots of information on how best to look after the area until it heals. It will normally take several months for a bone augmentation to fully heal so it’s likely to increase the overall time required for your dental implants. If only a tiny amount of bone is required, it may be possible to place your dental implant at the same time but otherwise implant surgery will be carried out at a later date and once the bone graft has integrated with your body.
This treatment is specialised and Dr Phu and our experienced and highly skilled dental team will make sure you are safe and comfortable at all times. You will not need to worry about a thing as every tiny detail will have been planned and considered to ensure your treatment is smooth and uneventful.

All-on-four is a procedure for securing a complete arch of teeth firmly in place, using just four dental implants, which is fewer than normally required. This technique is normally used to replace full lower dentures with a full arch bridge, but may also be used to replace a full upper denture. It can be an excellent solution if you currently wear full dentures or are facing complete tooth loss in the future.
