What is All-on-Four?
All-on-four is a procedure for securing a complete arch of teeth firmly in place, using just four dental implants, which is fewer than normally required. This technique is normally used to replace full lower dentures with a full arch bridge, but may also be used to replace a full upper denture. It can be an excellent solution if you currently wear full dentures or are facing complete tooth loss in the future.
How is All-on-Four Different from Other Dental Implant systems?
The main difference is the need for fewer dental implants. Normally six or more dental implants would be required to support a complete arch of teeth. The use of fewer dental implants does make treatment more cost-effective, but it is also a good option for anyone who has suffered a significant loss of jawbone.
After natural teeth are removed, the jawbone is gradually reabsorbed. Dental implants have to be surrounded with a certain amount of healthy bone. If there is insufficient bone then we may need to build up the bone in areas where it is deficient with a bone graft. Although a bone graft is a very straightforward procedure, it can add to the overall time and cost of treatment. With All-on-Four, the dental implants are inserted towards the front of the mouth where the bone tends to be thicker and stronger, minimising or eliminating the need for a bone graft.
What is the Procedure for All-on-Four?
With All-on-Four, two dental implants are inserted at the front of the jaw, while another two are inserted either side. These are angled backwards allowing longer implant posts to be used which provides greater stability while maximising the use of bone in this area. Soon after insertion we will be to place a temporary arch of teeth which will remain in place until your implants have fully healed. At this stage your permanent teeth will be made.
