Ideally we’d like to see you every six months for a regular examination and we encourage you to attend these appointments even if you think your teeth are fine. Often the initial signs of dental problems will create few, if any symptoms but early detection can help minimise the damage to your teeth and gums and any treatment is likely to be quicker and less invasive.
When you come to see us for a regular examination we do carry out a careful check of every single tooth, as well as assessing the condition of your gums. We will want to take regular sets of digital dental x-rays that will show any changes to your overall dental health. Generally, healthy adults will only need a set of x-rays every two years, or if there seems to be a particular problem. All this information is recorded we can closely monitor any changes.
During your check-up we will closely examine your oral tissues, including your tongue, the floor and roof of your mouth, the inside of your cheeks and your lips. This is a screening for any signs of oral cancer which can often manifest as changes to the colour or texture of these tissues, or as sores that fail to heal properly. Although thankfully still quite rare, early detection of oral cancer can greatly improve your prognosis.
Your regular examination should never feel rushed and we always allow lots of time to discuss any possible issues and to answer any questions. Taking plenty of time for each patient is very important to us, as we want to make sure you are properly looked after and that we can address any concerns you might have about your dental health.
You can make an appointment online or by calling us on (03) 9419 7022. We are located at 3/55 Victoria St, Fitzroy VIC 3065.
