Everyone hopes to have fresh breath and while occasional halitosis will affect us all, more persistent bad breath does require investigation. We know this problem can be embarrassing, but we are here to help you and take a very caring and sympathetic approach to this problem as it is important to find out the cause. We will listen to your concerns and can carefully examine your mouth to determine the reason for your halitosis and where appropriate will use the very latest diagnostic equipment to investigate any potential problems more fully.
Halitosis can be caused by tooth decay or gum disease, or it might be due to a leaky filling or badly fitting dental appliance that is trapping food and bacteria. One common causes of bad breath is a condition called xerostomia or dry mouth as saliva is nature’s way of keeping your mouth clean and comfortable. Xerostomia can sometimes develop as a result of prescription medications. Often halitosis is due to poor oral hygiene.
If we cannot find any reason for your bad breath, we will suggest you visit your GP as sometimes halitosis can be caused by an undiagnosed health problem. Certain respiratory tract infections as well as acid reflux and liver or kidney problems may all cause bad breath. If you have dry mouth that is being caused by a prescription medication then it may be worth having a chat to your doctor to see if it’s possible for them to change your prescription.
After an examination, we will talk to you about any problems we have discovered. We will discuss the findings of any diagnostic images and can show you any areas of concern by taking detailed photos of your mouth with our intra-oral camera. We always take a great deal of care to explain any dental issues as fully as possible, before talking to you about all possible treatment options. A professional cleaning with our oral therapist may also be very helpful as they can also provide information to improve oral care at home.
