Oral Hygiene

How Frequently Should I Have Regular Oral Hygiene Appointments?

We suggest you have an oral hygiene appointment at the same time as your regular examination as hopefully this will be all that is required for another six months. Oral hygiene appointments are an effective preventative dental treatment and this particular procedure is very gentle and non-invasive. We use the very latest ultrasonic scalars combined with water jets to comfortably remove any tartar build-up, leaving your teeth beautifully clean.

How Can This Treatment Improve Gum Health

Every day a thin layer of plaque will build up over the surfaces of your teeth. Most of this layer will be removed through regular brushing and flossing but anything remains can quickly harden into tartar. Tartar can only be removed by a dental professional. Even if you meticulously brush and floss, it’s easy to miss certain areas, often right in between teeth or around the gum line. Removing tartar is essential for good gum health as otherwise this can infect and inflame your gums, greatly increasing your risk of developing gum disease. If you have the first signs of gum disease, a condition called gingivitis, a professional cleaning may be enough to treat the problem provided it is combined with improved oral care at home.

Our hygiene department is fantastic at helping patients improve brushing and flossing techniques and it is particularly worthwhile asking us for advice if you struggle with any aspect of your dental care. We are a friendly bunch and patient education is something we all enjoy. You can call us on (03) 9419 7022. We are located at 3/55 Victoria St, Fitzroy VIC 3065.
