Crown lengthening may be carried out to help improve the health of your gums, or as a restorative or cosmetic procedure. St Vincent’s Dental Centre might suggest this treatment if you have a “gummy smile” and where extra gum tissue can make it appear as if your teeth are too short. Removing excess gum tissue can create a more balanced and attractive appearance.
Periodontal disease and tooth decay can cause a substantial amount of damage to your teeth and if teeth have broken off below the gum line then crown lengthening will expose more of the tooth, preparing it to receive a new restoration, for example a crown.
We generally carry out this procedure under local anaesthetic and the time required can depend on the number of teeth to be treated and the amount of tissue requiring removal. Treatment is designed to re-contour your gums, shaping them so they can nicely frame your teeth. Once completed, you should see an immediate difference in the length of your teeth with the full effects becoming apparent as your gums begin to heal.
