Fissure Sealants

discover how this service works

Why Should My Child Have Fissure Sealants?

Our aim is to try to keep your child’s teeth cavity free but the chewing surfaces of their back teeth are particularly vulnerable towards tooth decay. This is because these surfaces have lots of deep fissures and grooves that can easily trap food and bacteria and which are tricky to keep thoroughly clean. Fissure sealants can seal these surfaces, creating a smooth, easy to clean surface while protecting the teeth. The sealant consists of a very thin layer of resin that will not interfere with their bite but it can only be applied to teeth that are healthy and cavity free. This is why we suggest applying fissure sealants soon after your child’s adult teeth erupt.

How Are Fissure Sealants Applied?

The procedure to apply fissure sealants is very non-invasive and painless. After your child’s teeth are thoroughly cleaned we will lightly etch the chewing surfaces with a special fluid that helps create a better bond in between the sealant and the tooth. Next, the sealant is painted onto the tooth surfaces and will quickly harden. Afterwards your child will be able to eat and drink normally.

How Long Do Fissure Sealants Last?

They should last for quite a few years but if they become chipped or worn we can easily reapply them.

We want to do everything we can to help prevent your child from developing tooth decay and this is such as easy way to protect young teeth.

How Could Fissure Sealants Help Improve My Oral Health?

Fissure sealants consist of a thin protective layer of a special and very hard-wearing plastic material that is painted over the chewing surfaces of back teeth. These surfaces are particularly vulnerable towards decay due to the nature of their design. If you look at these teeth you will see they have lots of very deep fissures that can easily trap food and bacteria. SV Dental Centre prefers to seal these surfaces whenever we can and is why we may suggest this treatment for you. By sealing these surfaces we can prevent decay from occurring, protecting and preserving these teeth, we hope for life.

Who Can Have Fissure Sealants?

Fissure sealants are frequently applied to children’s newly erupted adult back teeth as they can only be used on teeth that do not have any signs of decay and which don’t have any fillings. There is no reason why adults with healthy back teeth cannot benefit from this treatment and it is quick, non-invasive and long-lasting. The fissure sealants are simply painted on to newly cleaned teeth that have been lightly etched to improve the bond between the sealant and the tooth. The sealant soon hardens and is thin enough not to affect your bite. There is no need for anaesthetic and we do regularly check the condition of any fissure sealants in case they need reapplying.
